Assessing Department Responsibilities

The Department of Assessing is responsible for property valuation in Pittsfield Township. The General Property Tax Act (Act 206 of 1893) requires us to assess at 50% of true cash value all assessable property as of December 31 of each year. This includes agricultural, commercial, industrial, residential, developmental, and personal (machinery, equipment, furniture, fixtures, and signs used by private businesses) property classes. To establish the taxable and assessed value of personal property, the Assessing Office identifies new business owners by performing street surveys, processes personal property statements, and audits the records and examines the personal property of a sampling of businesses.

Assessments are done by undertaking a review of the physical description of the property and/or improvement(s), real estate sales data, construction costs, rental income information, operating expenses, interest rates, and any and all other factors that may affect value.

For an in person meeting with the Assessor, please call or email to make an appointment. To speak with an assessing staff member or for in person inquiries, our office is open Monday thru Friday 8am to 5 pm. For requests for inspections of property, please call or email our office for an appointment. To request records maintained by the Assessor's office, please call or email our office during business hours. To discuss any discrepancies or disputes in information on properties, please call or email our office and we will do all we can to resolve them.
